Publisher: manages the daily operations of a publishing company. They lay out the editorial and commercial goals, establishing the criteria for content and their targeted market. They work with professionals across the departments of the publishing company and perform activities related to manuscript acquisitions, rights acquisitions, sales and oversee the production process.
Literary Agent: connects authors to book publishers and editors. Their responsibilities include reviewing sample write-ups, pitching the author’s work to the publishing houses, negotiating contracts and guiding them through the publishing process.
Rights Manager: is responsible for managing the intellectual property (IP) rights of the published material. Their work includes negotiating licenses, managing the sale of rights for foreign editions, translations, audio formats and other uses of the book or magazine.
Proofreader: checks written material for grammatical errors, ensures consistency in style. They are responsible for the final-stage check of the material before it goes for publishing.
Book Buyer: reviews publisher catalogues and sales kits to select books for purchase, balancing budget considerations with market needs. They make curatorial decisions based on company mission, industry knowledge, sales data and staff recommendations and communicate with bookstores for order processing.
Other than these, with digitalisation, new job opportunities have emerged like digital content editors, digital project managers, social media content writers, digital marketing interns, and specialists in e-publishing and content management systems. These digital roles require expertise in content management systems, SEO, digital marketing and multimedia production, marking a significant shift from traditional print-focused roles to tech-driven, multi-platform publishing careers.

Entry-level copy editors, junior editors, editorial assistants and even marketing professionals are offered annual salaries ranging from ₹2.3 lakh to ₹4.7 lakh, with averages around ₹3.8 lakh. For mid-level editors and publishers with 5-10 years of experience, average annual salaries range between ₹3.7 lakh and ₹7 lakh, depending on their specific role and responsibilities. Salaries generally increase steadily with experience, reflecting greater responsibility and expertise. Senior-level roles, including publishing managers or department heads with 10-20 years of experience under their belt, can command annual salaries from ₹4.4 lakh up to ₹20 lakh or more, with top professionals in large publishing houses earning even higher figures. The highest salaries are typically reserved for those in leadership or highly specialised positions.
