Chandrayaan 2: Key Facts To Know Before Watching The Moon Landing

India’s second mission to the moon launched by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), Chandrayaan 2, is in its final stage of landing. The entire nation’s eyes are set on this mission.

The lunar mission is expected to soft-land on 7th September 2019 from 1:10 am onwards. The landing will take place on the south pole of the moon’s surface, a place that is not visited by any other moon mission in the world.

Chandrayaan 2 was launched on 22 July 2019 and has been smooth so far. The entire soft-landing is going to take 15 minutes. Earlier, the moon lander, Vikram, after separating from its orbiting mothership, has already performed two manoeuvres to lower its altitude for a perfect landing which is said to take place between 1:30 am- 2:30 am 7th September, Saturday.

The spacecraft is said to do a soft landing to save the spacecraft from crashing hard on the moon’s surface. Once the moon lander, Vikram, lands on the lunar surface, its six wheeled rover Pragyaan will explore the surface of the moon for a total of 14 days. The orbiter of the mission will also keep revolving around the moon for one whole year.

If this mission achieves success, India will become the fourth nation to land its spacecraft on the moon, after Russia, USA and China.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi will be witnessing the launch from ISRO’s headquarters in Bengaluru along with 60 students from all over the country who won the ISRO conducted space quiz. For the rest of the Indian citizen, the live landing will be made available on ISRO’s official website https://www.isro.gov.in
