Mumbai University’s (MU) ATKT Advice Sparks Student Outcry

The Mumbai University (MU) campus, once abuzz with students excitedly discussing their academic journeys and futures, now stands in stark contrast to the turmoil within. The lingering issue of results being held ‘on reserve’ for nearly two months has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the lives of numerous students. Frustration and disheartenment have become the order of the day as these students are now being advised to apply for the ‘allowed-to-keep-term’ (ATKT) exams, a last-ditch attempt to secure their academic progress.

The Perplexing Dilemma

The root cause of this unprecedented academic conundrum lies in the summer session exams conducted between April and June, where results across various courses were inexplicably placed ‘on reserve.’ In the case of the Third Year Bachelor of Arts (TYBA) program alone, almost 900 students found themselves in limbo, eagerly awaiting their grades.

College teachers, who have been at the forefront of trying to unravel this complex issue, have shed light on the apparent chaos that unfolded during the assessment process. They claim that the problem stemmed from the involvement of three vendors in the on-screen assessment, leading to widespread confusion. However, the university, in its response, has shifted some of the blame onto students themselves, citing incorrect bubbling of seat numbers, barcodes, and other exam details, along with supervisory negligence, as contributing factors.

Educator Allegations and Unintended Mismatches

Allegations from educators suggest that humanities papers were inadvertently uploaded onto the software intended for commerce students and vice versa, further exacerbating the situation. Despite subject teachers rejecting these mismatches, the incorrect data remained within the system. Eventually, these papers were pulled out and assessed manually, further delaying the release of results.

Student Stories of Struggle

For affected students, the repercussions are dire and personal. With the academic calendar progressing, many have already lost a precious semester, a setback that could potentially ripple into their future prospects. The university’s solution, proposing that students re-appear for exams they were not at fault for, adds to their frustration and anxiety.

A BSc in Hospitality Studies student, who wished to remain anonymous, shared his disheartening experience. “Our results were announced at the end of July, I received all my scores except for the one related to my specialization. Some of my classmates are in the same boat. We have been relentlessly pursuing the university throughout this ordeal, but there is no relief,” he lamented.

A Growing Call for Resolution

This student’s story is not unique. Many affected students are not only grappling with academic uncertainty but also face the harsh reality of delayed career prospects. “I have done well in the paper, and it would be unfair if I am forced to reappear for it,” he added, highlighting the injustice faced by many.

As the winter session of exams approaches at the end of October, students find themselves caught in a frustrating maze of institutional inertia. Their academic futures hang precariously in the balance, as the call for transparency, fairness, and swift resolution from Mumbai University becomes increasingly fervent. In the midst of this tumultuous journey, these resilient students stand as stark reminders of the consequences of irresponsible behaviour within the institution itself, and they remain determined to reclaim the normalcy they deserve in their academic pursuits. The spotlight is firmly on Mumbai University, urging it to rectify its course and prioritize the welfare of the students who depend on it for their educational dreams.
